Großartig dargestellt von James Stewart zeigt "Die Glenn Miller Story" das Leben des wohl bekanntesten Bandleaders Amerikas. Anfangs noch erfolglos und verarmt, muss Miller seine Posaune mehr als einmal ins Pfandhaus tragen. Nur die Liebe und der Glaube seiner Frau June Allyson lassen ihn durchhalten. Anfang der 40er Jahre hat Glenn Miller es geschafft er ist Star einer eigenen TV-Show und sein unvergleichlicher Sound der Inbegriff des Swing. Doch der zweite Weltkrieg naht und das Schicksal schlägt unerbittlich zu... Musiklegenden wie Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, Frances Langford, und natürlich das Glenn-Miller-Orchester interpretieren die unvergesslichen Melodien von Miller. Unter der Regie von Anthony Mann setzt der Film dem Meister des Swing ein unvergessliches Denkmal.

März 1904 in Clarinda, Iowa, geboren stand Alton Glenn Millers (mittelmäßiger Posaunist, caring Bandleader, Komponist und perfekter Arrangeur) Leben knappe 20 Jahre im Dienste der Bigband und des Swings. 1928 heiratete er Helen, und es war vor allem sie, die ihn mit ihrer Liebe und ihrem Glauben an den speziellen Sound unterstützte, sodass Miller nach jahrelangen Niederlagen letztendlich im Jahre 1939 - der "Glenn Miller Sound" war durch einen verletzungsbedingten Ausfall des Leadtrompeters aus reinem Zufall geboren - mit Buchungen für das New Yorker Glen Island Casino New Rochelle, das Baltimore`s Hippodrome Theatre, das New York State Fair und die Carnegie Hall alle Besucherrekorde brach und ihm der Durchbruch gelang.
Aus Nächstenliebe und Patriotismus verpflichtete sich Miller, ein erklärter Gegner des Nationalsozialismus, 3 Jahre später im September 1942 freiwillig bei der Army Air Force und übernahm die Leitung des "Army Air Force Orchestra" mit dem hervorragenden Arrangeur Jerry Gray.
Am 15. Dezember1944 startete Glenn Miller von einer Royal-Air-Force-Basis in London aus in einer Norseman C-64 für die Vorbereitung eines Weihnachtskonzertes im befreiten Paris, wo er nie ankam. Ursache und Ort seines Todes sind bis heute unbekannt.

Much superior to other sci-fi of the era 5 von 5 Punkten
I originally saw this movie "It Came from Outer Space" aka "Strangers from Outer Space" on a 14" black and whit TV as a child. And believe me I was seeing eyes all over the place for several nights.
John Putnam (Richard Carlson of "Creature from the Black Lagoon" fame) an amateur astronomer was watching the desert sky with his girl, Ellen Fields (Barbara Rush) a local school teacher, when a strange meteor came down near buy. John, first to reach it swore he saw a door shut. We see it and believe him. However no one else does. What will happen next? Watch and find out.
You can spot a Jack Arnold film by the pacing and initial dialog. This one gave me nightmares as a kid. However now when I watch this film now, I can enjoy the DOWN TO EARTH portrayal of misplaced aliens. You get the alien view from its innards. I was disappointed to find that this is not a 3-D film. I also have the children's book of this with still shots. Your next film to view is "OUT THERE" (1995) an HBO film staring Bill Campbell and Wendy Schaal. It shows real alien interaction with people and accordions.
There is always hope that a 3D version has survived and will surface in the form of a DVD.

Audie Murphy mal nicht als der nette Junge, sondern als eiskalter
Revolverheld. Gut gespielt baut der Film von Anfang an die Spannung
auf, bis zu seinem ungewöhnlichem Ende. Sicher einer der besseren Filme
Audie Murphys, der nach Ansicht von Regisseur Budd Boetticher, ein guter,
aber vielfach unterschätzter Schauspieler war.
Ein spannender Film 4 von 5 Punkten
Ein wahrlich spannender und etwas mystischer Film in hoher Bild-und Tonqualität. Audie Murphy spielt hier nicht die Rolle des "netten Jungen", sondern die eines Killers, der für Geld die "Feinde" reicher Leute und Politiker aus dem Weg schafft. Die Rolle des Einzelgängers und Mörders John Gant, dessen Ruf ihm immer vorauseilt, spielt Murphy großartig. Er ist praktisch ein "Mörder mit Herz". Der Film ist spannend von Anfang bis zum Showdown, wobei man bedenken muß, daß der Killer Gant während des gesamten Films keinen einzigen Menschen mit der Waffe tötet, sondern mit der Wahrheit...Das Einzige was fehlt, ist die Romantik aber das wird auf Grund der Leistungen der Hauptdarsteller verziehen! |

Louis Armstrong würde wieder mitspielen, würde er noch leben und ein zweites mal gefragt werden. Dieser Film begeistert durch seine nie langweilige, bis ins kleinste Detail ausgearbeitete Ausführlichkeit. Anthony Mann spricht mit diesem Film nicht nur die Liebhaber des Swing an, er berührt jeden - Es ensteht das Gefühl, Glenn Miller selbst hätte an diesem Film mitgearbeitet. Wenn Sie Ihn haben werden Sie öfter sehen. |

Spannung und schwarzer Humor auf klassische Weise 5 von 5 Punkten
Verwirrspiel um die Aufklärung eines Mordes, der um eines Falken willen begangen wird. Am Ende hat man den Falken - oder doch nicht? Für Krimifreunde, die auch die besondere Art des "schwarzen Humors" verdauen können, welche hier vorkommt, ein Muss! Jedenfalls ist der Film ein Klassiker, den man schon deshalb gesehen haben sollte, weil er prägend für die Filmgeschichte geworden ist.
Huston und Bogart-Team für die Ewigkeit 5 von 5 Punkten
"Die Spur des Falken" auch bekannt als d"Der Malteser Falke" ist einer der wichtigsten Filme in der gesamten Geschichte des Kinos. Dies liegt nicht nur daran, dass der Film spanned und erstklassig ist, sondern auch daran, dass es der Startpunkt für den ganz großen Erfolg für Humphrey Bogart(der hier kongenial den hard-boiled detective Sam Spade verkörpert) und Regiegenie John Huston. Der Film war das Regiedebut für John Huston und der Durchbruch für Bogart,der sich bis dahin mit kleineren Rollen durchschlagen musste.
"Die Spur des Falken" war auch die Premiere für eine wegweisende Konstellation:Huston im Regiesessel und Bogart in der Hauptrolle( siehe u.a auch "Der Schatz in der Sierra Madre" oder "Gangster in Key Largo").
Der Film selbst ist der archetypische Film Noir:düster,zynisch,brutal und eiskalt. Bogart in seiner Parderolle im Zusammenspiel mit Mary Astor oder Peter Lorre ist unvergesslich. Die Dialoge sind zudem köstlich und unglaublich pointiert.
Unbedingte Empfehlung also von meiner Seite, denn besser wird Kino nicht.
Katastrophale Übersetzung 3 von 5 Punkten
Das Buch "Der Malteser Falke" erschien kürzlich in der Süddeutsche-Krimi-Bibliothek und nachdem ich es gelesen hatte, wollte ich unbedingt die Verfilmung dieser fesselnden Geschichte sehen. Was das Optische angeht, fängt der Film die Stimmungen des Buches ein und stellt die Eindrücke gekonnt dar. Alles passt. Aber viele der Sätze aus dem Buch tauchen im -sehr nah am Buch orientierten- Film überhaupt nicht auf. Viel mehr sind viele Dialoge äußerst ungünstig übersetzt; das konnte man beim Buch wesentlich besser. Der Film im Original ist einfach klasse, die deutsche Synchronisierung erfordert oft Humor...

The Falcon was lost in time and a mystery begins when a beautiful but enigmatic woman shows up at the Spade and Archer detective agency. She gives them a story that is implausible; however they are well paid. This leads to the death of Archer. Who did it and why? The police suspect Sam Spade. Who do you suspect? As the story unfolds many suspects show up and the mystery of the missing falcon continues.
I will not go through the whole story However there is many well know actors and Hammett dialog.
I only give stars to the movie and never the media. However I lucked out because this DVD (ASIN: 6305729328) is crisp and clear and B&W. You are not forced to watch the extras but have them as an added plus.

Klassiker unter den Western!!! 5 von 5 Punkten
Ersteinmal möchte ich sagen, daß ich sehr viele Western gesehen habe, es gibt aber nur einige die man getrost 10 mal oder mehr sehen kann.
Das beeindruckende ist nicht einmal die Story, sondern die Art und Weise wie A. Mann sie erzählt ohne, daß einem jemals eine Minute langweilig wird.
Winchester 73 zeichnet sich nicht nur durch seine hervorragenden Schauspieler, sondern auch durch die von ihnen verkörperten Figuren aus, die perfekt gezeichnet sind.
Einer der großen Western in alter Manier für die Ewigkeit.
Unbedingt empfehlenswert, da man sieht, daß großes Kino keine teure Spezialeffekte braucht, sondern tolle Story, Schauspieler, die ihr Handwerk verstehen und eine tolle Regie. |

At first I was skeptical about the book. It is obviously ghostwritten. However, the ghostwriter is talented, his style a synthesis of Hemingway and Mickey Spillane. And Audie Murphy has a great and heroic tale to tell. Murphy's war is a lot different than say Eisenhower's and Patton's. Murphy became a master at small unit infantry tactics. He was one of the men. Ike and Patton were masters of strategy and were not really part of the men. What Murphy's story also illuminates is it is often just pure chance whether a soldier survives a war. Two pals of his were wounded in the right spots. Another had his heart pierced by a small shell fragment. Another buddy trusted a group of Germans faking a surrender and received a chest full of German lead for his trouble. For all those who liked the fictional "Battle Cry", you will like this book.
Better Than The Movie! 5 von 5 Punkten
There is something compelling about the movie version To Hell And Back which I first viewed as a boy in the 1950s. Perhaps it was the fact that the star was the hero himself "replaying" some of his own wartime experiences. Over the years, the movie has appeared repeatedly on television, and almost routinely on the History Channel. I've watched it many times. The movie, however, pales by comparison to Murphy's actual Medal of Honor citation. Now that I finally have read his book, the citation itself seems to offer only a fraction of the story behind his guts,determination, and eventually the horrible memories he endured until his untimely death in a plane crash. It makes me shutter to think of myself as a combat veteran from Vietnam compared to what men like Audie Murphy had to endure for the duration of their tours in World War II. But, it also makes me realize that war for frontline troops has changed little from one generation to the next. This ought to be REQUIRED READING for everyone who send others to war!

i never served in the military. after reading mr murphy's portrayal i am filled with the belief that i am luckier than mr. murphy ever was in combat. i also witnessed an A&E biography of audie murphy. I strongly suggest reading his book before viewing this program. i was left feeling morose. i aquired a deep and obeisant respect, not only for mr. murphy but, for all combat veterans.

I first read this book as a young man before entering high school. The book and Audie Murphy became a symbol of not only what one man can do, but what one man can stir in the friends and comrades around him.
Murphy's acts, thoughts, and efforts described in this book make him an absolute hero not only during the war, but should be displayed for generations to come as a man that believed in our country and the American Cause. It is the ideals that he fought for, and the American people that he believed in that make this book a must read for all types of people that would want to feel good about the United States of America and to be personaly uplifted and moved by the challenges that this soldier endured and overcame.
Reality of War hits harder than a .50 cal through the chest! 5 von 5 Punkten

Tolkien, "The Teachings of Don Juan-Trilogy" by Carlos Casteneda", "Hammer of the Gods": the Led Zeppelin Story, "Wired", the Life and Times of John Belushi and this book are the only ones that you really don't want to put down until you're finished! Young Audie Murphy spent more than 200 days on the front lines of WWII and survived. The detailed and graphic account of individual and group battles will move you to experience emotions you didn't think you had. By the time he was 19, this scrawny Texas teenager became a man, a professional soldier and an American hero. Perhaps his greatest contribution to today's soldiers and leaders is recognition that the welfare and safety of his men came before his own comforts and needs. His leadership styles, personal ethics and moral examples are emulated and continued today with the Noncommissioned Officers of the SGT Audie Murphy Club. These excellent leaders and modern day warriors have all read this incredible tribute to a leader who cared for his soldiers, loved his country....and remained humble as the sharecropper's son he was. Word for word, this is as powerful as REAL war drama gets without actually experiencing it yourself. If you are a military leader in any branch of the service NCO or Officer or if you are a corporate head, read this book and learn how to care for your subordinates/workers. By the way, I've been a member of the SGT Audie Murphy Club since April 1994.

At first I was skeptical about the book. It is obviously ghostwritten. However, the ghostwriter is talented, his style a synthesis of Hemingway and Mickey Spillane. And Audie Murphy has a great and heroic tale to tell. Murphy's war is a lot different than say Eisenhower's and Patton's. Murphy became a master at small unit infantry tactics. He was one of the men. Ike and Patton were masters of strategy and were not really part of the men. What Murphy's story also illuminates is it is often just pure chance whether a soldier survives a war. Two pals of his were wounded in the right spots. Another had his heart pierced by a small shell fragment. Another buddy trusted a group of Germans faking a surrender and received a chest full of German lead for his trouble. For all those who liked the fictional "Battle Cry", you will like this book.
Better Than The Movie! 5 von 5 Punkten
There is something compelling about the movie version To Hell And Back which I first viewed as a boy in the 1950s. Perhaps it was the fact that the star was the hero himself "replaying" some of his own wartime experiences. Over the years, the movie has appeared repeatedly on television, and almost routinely on the History Channel. I've watched it many times. The movie, however, pales by comparison to Murphy's actual Medal of Honor citation. Now that I finally have read his book, the citation itself seems to offer only a fraction of the story behind his guts,determination, and eventually the horrible memories he endured until his untimely death in a plane crash. It makes me shutter to think of myself as a combat veteran from Vietnam compared to what men like Audie Murphy had to endure for the duration of their tours in World War II. But, it also makes me realize that war for frontline troops has changed little from one generation to the next. This ought to be REQUIRED READING for everyone who send others to war!

i never served in the military. after reading mr murphy's portrayal i am filled with the belief that i am luckier than mr. murphy ever was in combat. i also witnessed an A&E biography of audie murphy. I strongly suggest reading his book before viewing this program. i was left feeling morose. i aquired a deep and obeisant respect, not only for mr. murphy but, for all combat veterans.
The best and most graphic true story from WWII! 5 von 5 Punkten
I first read this book as a young man before entering high school. The book and Audie Murphy became a symbol of not only what one man can do, but what one man can stir in the friends and comrades around him.
Murphy's acts, thoughts, and efforts described in this book make him an absolute hero not only during the war, but should be displayed for generations to come as a man that believed in our country and the American Cause. It is the ideals that he fought for, and the American people that he believed in that make this book a must read for all types of people that would want to feel good about the United States of America and to be personaly uplifted and moved by the challenges that this soldier endured and overcame.
Reality of War hits harder than a .50 cal through the chest! 5 von 5 Punkten

Tolkien, "The Teachings of Don Juan-Trilogy" by Carlos Casteneda", "Hammer of the Gods": the Led Zeppelin Story, "Wired", the Life and Times of John Belushi and this book are the only ones that you really don't want to put down until you're finished! Young Audie Murphy spent more than 200 days on the front lines of WWII and survived. The detailed and graphic account of individual and group battles will move you to experience emotions you didn't think you had. By the time he was 19, this scrawny Texas teenager became a man, a professional soldier and an American hero. Perhaps his greatest contribution to today's soldiers and leaders is recognition that the welfare and safety of his men came before his own comforts and needs. His leadership styles, personal ethics and moral examples are emulated and continued today with the Noncommissioned Officers of the SGT Audie Murphy Club. These excellent leaders and modern day warriors have all read this incredible tribute to a leader who cared for his soldiers, loved his country....and remained humble as the sharecropper's son he was. Word for word, this is as powerful as REAL war drama gets without actually experiencing it yourself. If you are a military leader in any branch of the service NCO or Officer or if you are a corporate head, read this book and learn how to care for your subordinates/workers. By the way, I've been a member of the SGT Audie Murphy Club since April 1994.
