This movie was sharply divergent from the book on which it was based. (The title of the book will not be included here so as to protect all innocent or in any way connect it to this poor portrayal). Artistic license was allowed to run amok, literally weakening the true account. Poor acting and a trite script didn't help its cause either.
In no way was Cathy Lee's character of teacher "Maggie" reflective of her real life counterpart. "Maggie's" teaching methods and the things she said and did were far removed from anything her real life counterpart would ever have done. Maggie was also much older than her real counterpart at the time this story took place. That also threw in more fictionalized accounts.
Short version - Caitlin Eldridge was remanded to a hospital after injuring another child. During the interim, she was placed in a special needs class where her IQ of 168 was "discovered." Setbacks involved sexual molestation. Maggie was obsessed with getting her class included in auditorium activities. The worst part of this movie was when Maggie cuts Caitlin off at a critical point in the child's disclosure of sexual abuse to hustle her off to that darn auditorium. Meanwhile, John Getz is the injured boyfriend, crying in his beer about being given the back burner treatment by Maggie. His whines become tiresome, like this movie.
Maudlin ending with the "Teacher Maggie" character saying how only she could be that bridge for Caitlin. Oh, brother! |

Man kann schon beinahe hören, wie der Werbeeinzeiler der Studiobosse in Hollywood durch Crimson Tide hallt wie das Sonar im dazugehörigen Soundtrack: "Es handelt sich um Die Caine war ihr Schicksal auf einem Atom-U-Boot!" Während einer angespannten Konfrontation mit russischen Kriegsschiffen verhindert an Bord des U-Boots USS Alabama ein Problem mit dem Bordfunk, dass Befehle eindeutig empfangen werden. Der Navy-Offizier Denzel Washington sieht sich aufgrund dessen einem großen ethischen Dilemma gegenüber: Entweder er missachtet die Befehle des legendären Captain Ramsey (Gene Hackman), der die Atomraketen des U-Boots abfeuern will, oder er folgt dessen Order und riskiert damit, dass ein unprovozierter Atomkrieg ausgelöst wird.
Es handelt sich hier um einen Film, in dem die Schauspieler im Mittelpunkt stehen, wobei die Wortgefechte zwischen Washigton und Hackman das eigentlich Unterhaltsamste darstellen - bei jedem der beiden Charaktere stehen ganz eigene, nachvollziehbare Beweggründe hinter der jeweiligen Entscheidung. Es gibt keine eindeutigen Bösewichte, und es ist auch nicht leicht, "richtig" und "falsch" voneinander zu unterscheiden - was das Erschreckendste an dem nuklearen Patt darstellt. Regisseur Tony Scott (der Quentin Tarantinos Drehbuch True Romance verfilmte) ließ die Dialoge von Tarantino aufpeppen - was wohl einer der Gründe dafür ist, weshalb sich die Seeleute zum Beispiel über die Silver-Surfer-Comics unterhalten. -Jim Emerson

tense sub-drama is first rate thriller 5 von 5 Punkten
Gene Hackman and Wesley Snipe play a game of chess in a power struggle that has the fate of the world in the balance. Denzel Washington is Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter, the new XO on a nuclear sub The Crimson Tide, Captained by Capt. Frank Ramsey, Gene Hackman in another typically strong and dis-likable performance. Gene's character is arrogant, slightly redneck, got-there-the-hard-way subdriver and has overbearing manner, right down to an irritating little dog named Jack Daniels. He is slightly intimidated by Denzel's highly education, got there by hard study, and naturally tries to deny this - even to himself - but the personality clash is going to happen.
They receive a properly formatted flash action message saying, they must launch their missiles against Russia, and before the message can authenticate it the radio goes down. Gung Ho, slightly power-mad, Gene Hackman, believe is orders to the letter. In this case, in lack of confirmation they are directed to launch to prevent a first attack against US. Denzel, a less war-minded officer, prefers to wait for a bit to confirm before signing the death warrant on the world. And he is willing to back this by taking over command of the ship. Naturally, Hackman is not taking that and fights back.
In the middle of this struggle, is Weps (Yeppers, Aragon in a buzz cut!!). Viggo Mortensen's character, Lt. Peter 'Weps' Ince, respects both men. He is friends with Denzel, but he has served together with Hackman as more will to work with him.
His character is torn by friends and chain of command, plus his own worry and conscience about the effect upon his family.
Good Support from George Dzundza; Nice cameo at the end by Jason Robards.
Well written, acted and strongly paced.
