Beautiful Series - You'll get hooked 5 von 5 Punkten
This is a little gem, especially for those of us who were to young to follow it when it came out just around the Charles-Diana wedding. Brilliant actors (Edward Fox is unbelieveable), crisp dialogue that never turns hokey and a story that keeps you on the edge of you seats even though, of course, you know the outcome from history books. After a rather untypical first episode (lots of it set in Africa) the cast & story grows on you so in the end you are very sad when the last episode draws to its conclusion.
Two caveats:
1) As this series employs lots of studio settings (remember, those were the eighties) the atmosphere tends to be a bit artificial in indoor scenes. Except for the occasional outdoor scene, this is basically a 6 hour theatre play with lots of locations.
2) The series does never really explore the depths of the relationship Edward-Wallis, so don't expect endless love scenes. Also, Wallis Simpson IMHO seems to be mellowed down and comes across as scheming, but mostly very nice and a bit naive. I think the real Wallis was a much tougher cookie. |
