Scott Kinney ist ein amerikanischer Geologe, der Forschungen bei einem nahe gelegenen Vulkan betreibt. Doch schon bald zeigt sich, dass nicht das Ausbrechen des Vulkans die größte Gefahr ist, in der Kinney schwebt. In einer geheimen Forschungseinrichtung hat man nämlich auf Basis fossiler D N S einen prähistorischen Alligator gezüchtet, der nun ausgebrochen ist. george moran, albergatore a miami, decide di fare una scappata a santo domingo, per cercare lucia, una giovanissima guerrigliera che gli salvo' la vita quando, con altri marines, sbarco' in quell'isola in difesa degli ideali democratici. non trova la ragazza, ma rimane invece implicato in un intrigo con il generale andres de boya, gia' dittatore-massacratore, la bionda moglie di costui, mary, gia' stata amante di george, jiggs, ex dipendente di andres, nolan, un ex-marine antico compagno d'armi di moran, e un delinquente indigeno. la tresca fra moran e mary e' nota al generale, che incarica il suo uomo di fiducia di eliminarli, anche se aveva gia' deciso di liquidare la donna con due milioni di dollari. il tradimento lo induce a carpirle una firma di rinuncia ai soldi, a cui lei ovviamente tiene al massimo, ma il denaro interessa anche a jiggs, al faccendiere locale e all'ex-marine nolan, percio' la lotta e' dura e costellata di attentati e cadaveri.
