Un giorno d'autunno a Midwich, cittadina della California, tutta la popolazione ha un misterioso collasso collettivo. Quando si risvegliano, tutto sembra normale, ma ben presto il medico locale, Alan Chaffee, scopre che le dieci donne in grado di avere una gravidanza, sposate o meno, attendono un figlio. Mentre la dottoressa Susan Verner studia il fenomeno per conto del Governo, tutte le donne gravide partoriscono nello stesso istante, tranne Melanie Roberts che ha perso il nascituro. I bimbi, con occhi color cobalto e capelli bianchi, si rivelano telepatici e influenzano negativamente con suggestioni ipnotiche i malcapitati abitanti inducendoli al suicidio: tra questi il custode della scuola, la giovane Melanie che ha abortito, la moglie di Alan, Barbara che dopo esser stata indotta ad ustionarsi un braccio dalla perfida figlia Mara, leader del gruppo, si getta in un burrone. Solo David, figlio dell'insegnante Jill Mc Gee, sembra sensibile a un barlume d'umanità. Mentre in altri luoghi del pianeta sta succedendo lo stesso inquietante fenomeno, i piccoli fanno suicidare la dottoressa Susan, rea di conoscere il loro segreto: infatti ha conservato sotto formalina l'unica nata morta del gruppo. Gli abitanti, guidati dalla moglie del reverendo George Miller, uccisosi a sua volta dopo aver tentato di sparare a Mara, assaltano invano i bimbi con torce e bastoni. Frattanto Mara chiede ad Alan di preparare tutto per la loro partenza, ma il medico, l'unico ad aver provato ad insegnare qualcosa ai ragazzi, decide di utilizzare una bomba per eliminarli. Mentre Jill riesce a portare via David, l'unico a mostrare segni di umanità, Alan muore insieme ai giovani alieni.

Pool-Hustler Fast Eddie Felson findet den jungen, vielversprechenden Pool-Spieler Vincent in einer lokalen Bar und er sieht in ihm eine jüngere Version von sich.
